What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) means writing and structuring content so it becomes the direct answer an engine shows the user: in Google's AI Overviews, a voice assistant or a chatbot. Instead of getting someone to click a link, the goal is for your answer to be the answer they read.

How AEO works

Answer engines look for a passage that answers the question quickly and clearly. So AEO starts with structure:

  1. A heading phrased as a question, the way people ask it
  2. A one or two sentence answer right under the heading
  3. Detail, an example and sources after the answer
  4. An author name and an update date, so it is clear who stands behind the answer

This page is an example: the heading is the question, and the first paragraph is an answer that stands on its own.

An example

Someone asks Google "what is LinkedIn SSI". A page that opens with three paragraphs of history won't give a quick answer. A page whose first sentence defines the term, followed by its four components, gives the engine exactly what it is looking for.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

The three terms overlap heavily. AEO focuses on being the answer. GEO focuses on being a source that generative engines cite. SEO is the foundation of both.

Google addresses this directly. Its May 2026 guide names AEO and GEO and says many of the "hacks" circulating online aren't effective. According to Google, from its Search's perspective this is still SEO, and there is no need to chunk content into tiny pieces or add special markup for AI.

How it relates to LinkedIn

The same structure works in a LinkedIn post or article: a clear question, the answer up front, the detail after. When I write for CEOs, I build the posts that answer client questions this way. It helps the human reader first, and then the engines too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question. GEO focuses on being a source that generative AI engines cite. In practice people use them almost interchangeably, and both rest on SEO.

Do I need special schema for AEO?

For Google, no. Google says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add to appear in generative AI search. Structured data is still useful for rich results.

Does AEO work in languages other than English?

Yes. The principles don't depend on language: a clear question, a direct answer and sources. What changes is the phrasing, because you need to write the question the way your audience asks it.
